Coyotes have been spotted in neighborhoods and on property close to downtown Alexander City.

One Alex City man was mowing his grass and saw a male coyote standing in his backyard in the Avondale Village neighborhood.

Alex City Animal Control Office Vernon says we shouldn't be surprised to see more coyotes as more residential developments take place.

"It's gettin' springtime. Coyotes are very adaptive to their area," Vernon said.

Vernon says coyotes have been spotted near the massive demolition of the old Russell textile buildings.

The demolition has chased away rodents such as rats which are part of the coyote's diet.

At this point, the coyotes aren't threatening humans, but Vernon warns people not get too close. If you see one, make some noise, raise your arms to show you're bigger but don't run.

"We've had one rabid coyote over the years," Vernon said.

Vernon has tried to trap them in a 30-pound cage, but he's found out, the animals are pretty smart. They can pick up the human scent long before they approach the cage.
