COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Muscogee County School District has announced its first-year teacher of the year.

This year’s recipient is Collen Tighe, a special education teacher at Gentian Elementary School.

She says being a special education teacher is very challenging but also very rewarding.

Tie also says being recognized in her first year was so unexpected and overwhelming.

Actually, very happy especially with this year being my first year I feel like I’ve already seen them grow so much and even every day I’m writing things down and I’m already looking forward to next and doing so many things different,” said Colleen Tighe, a special education teacher

Tighe also says it is an honor to receive the award because she says you don't really hear about special education on a normal basis.
