SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - Monday night's opening round girls soccer matchup was certainly heart-pounding for Smiths Station.
Down 2-1 with less than 20 minutes to go, the Panthers rallied to tie the game, then won in overtime with a goal just two-and-a-half minutes in.
Late in the second half, Smiths Station gave up the go-ahead goal to Enterprise to trail 2-1. Needing a spark, they got one from Ariel Jones.
Teammate Emily Dunnivan found her in open space and Jones took it the rest of the way for the game-tying goal.
Then in overtime, on a free kick, Sydney Shellhouse sent one toward the net which set up Mayson Jaindl's shot that went in, giving the Panthers the victory after nearly suffering a loss in regulation.
Smiths Station will face Fairhope in the next round, a team coming off a 7-0 win in their opening round matchup against Baker. The game is at Fairhope.
