(WTVM) – Sydney Weaver of Columbus shot even par-72 to earn a share of fourth place after Tuesday’s opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
Weaver, a former Brookstone Cougar who is a senior at Berry College, bogeyed 11, her second hole of the day, but came on strong to birdie the fifth hole to climb back to even. Phoebe Mattana of Williams College leads the field after shooting 3-under 69 on the first day.
Weaver competing as an individual golfer, qualifying for nationals on the strength of her No. 4 national ranking in Division III. She was the Southern Athletic Association golfer of the year and was a medalist at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational and at the Jekyll Island Invitational.
Round two of the four round tournament begins Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. ET.
