LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – A Phenix City man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 54-year-old Ricky Brooks.

On Friday, 29-year-old Rodney Jermaine Day was charged with murder, robbery in the first degree, and theft of property in the first degree.

Brooks was found strangled inside his Smiths Station home in January 2017.

"Friday, we were looking, at, our investigators, were taking a look at the evidence we had, and we felt like it was just the right time to go ahead, and present the formal charges against him," said Sheriff Jay Jones of the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Officials also say the victim's television, cell phone, and receiver was stolen from the home. Ricky Brook's car, that was also stolen, was found near the suspect's home in Phenix City.

The two are believed to have known each other in some capacity.

"There was an acquaintance relationship between the two individuals, important to state that, due to the fact we don't want people thinking this was just a stranger on stranger type of crime, it was not. These individuals were acquainted to each other prior to this event," said Sheriff Jones.

Mr. Brooks was well-known in East Alabama and West Georgia.  He was a deacon at his church and a popular suit salesman at Columbus' Looking Good location on Broadway

Eddie Clayton, who worked alongside Ricky Brooks at Looking good says the family, and Ricky can now now be at peace following the arrest.

"I'm happy about that, I'm real happy that they found him, because Ricky was too good of a person for it to just go unsolved like that, you know, he didn't do anybody nothing wrong, I'm very happy about that," said Clayton.

Rodney Jermaine Day is being held inside the Lee County Detention Facility on a $255,000 bond.

The case will be presented to the Lee County Grand Jury.
