COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Women's Health is the focus of St. Francis Hospital’s free community programs set for May.

Programs are being offered by St. Francis Hospital during the month of May, observed nationally as Women's Health Month.

Monday in the hospital’s lecture hall, the topic was bladder health.

The "Mind over Bladder" program focused on Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (bladder leakage) which can include urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, and constipation.

The purpose of this class is to teach people to engage their inner cores, how to use their diaphragms for breathing as well as their abs, back and pelvic floor muscles to assist with reducing, eliminating, and preventing pelvic floor dysfunction.

Physical Therapists Joanne O'Conner says it’s not something women should be embarrassed to talk about with their doctor about.

“There is no reason not to bring it up to your doctor. On average, it takes a woman about 6 ½ to 7 years to tell her doctor she is having these issues,” said O’Conner.
