OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - For the seventh year, The City of Opelika's Public Works Department has put out American flags on the grave sites of veterans.

More than 1,000 flags have been distributed around the city's four cemeteries to remember the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Public Works Director, Mike Hilyer, says, “It's a tremendous honor to be able to do it. So many soldiers gave their lives for us. To fight for our freedom. I think anything we can do to honor them is of great credit for us.”

The city will host a Memorial Day service at 10 a-m Monday in front of city hall.
