OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – Wednesday is day two as the Opelika Police Department is hosting its annual Summer Youth Camp.

Over 50 soon-to-be fourth graders are taking part in activities and learning exercises at Spring Villa Park Campgrounds.

The 4-day camp is an alternative summer program for area youth.

Campers able to meet members of K-9 team, state troopers, officers, and firemen.

Captain Bobby Kilgore with OPD says it's important to for children to have a bond with law enforcement.

“We want to bring them out now, and meet us, meet the D.A.R.E. officers, meet the other police officers out here in t-shirts, shorts, playing games, having fun, taking them swimming, doing all that good stuff, before we walk into the classroom in uniform and start talking to them about D.A.R.E,” Kilgore said.

The camp ends Friday with a special visit from the SWAT Team and State Helicopter.
