COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus police are cracking down on distracted drivers in North Columbus.

On Thursday morning, officers were dressed as construction workers who would spot out the distracted drivers, and a uniformed officer would appear to write the ticket.

There was a total of 96 people who were cited for distracted driving in the area of Bradley Park Drive and Whitesville Road between 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Police say that distracted driving can range from eating, texting, working on a laptop, or putting on make-up while driving.

”If you take your eyes off the road for four seconds and if you’re traveling 60 miles per hour, you cover a lot of ground and can wander off to the right into the next lane and into oncoming traffic and drivers should realize - we’ve had a lot of accidents that way,” said Major J.D. Hawk with the Columbus Police Department.

While talking on the phone is not illegal, if it is distracting you from driving and causes you to drive extra fast or extra slow, you can be ticketed.

Officers will continue cracking down on distracted drivers in this way.
