Just about every time we have major rain and flooding, we see people who try to plow through flood waters. They eventually get stuck and some have to be rescued.

The big question is - why? "Because they want to get home," Laura Myers said. Dr. Laura Myers is the Director and Senior Research Scientist for the Center for Advanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama.

"They think they have a destination in mind. It's home, work, to get to their children. So that is the route they know," Myers said.

There is a campaign to convince drivers not to challenge any roadway if there is water. The catch phrase is "turn around and don't drown."

Still for some, that phrase doesn't work. Myers says some drivers are convinced their vehicle can make it through and after this week, more education is needed to show that is not true.

"I really think showing these recent events and what happened to these vehicles is a big help. Letting them know vehicles can't handle it, this is going to happen to your car. This is what can happen to you," Myers said.

Dr. Myers says basically you need to check your ego, take your time, and obey that “turn around and don’t drown” slogan.
