TUSCALOOSA, AL (WSFA) -

Fall football practice is off and running for the Crimson Tide for the 2017 season and it started with some controversy.

After head coach Nick Saban gathered all the information necessary to understand the DUI arrest of defensive lineman De'Shawn Hand last weekend he said that following all protocol and if he adheres to every single in-house request he will not serve a suspension. Alabama enrolled him in a 48 hour inpatient treatment in addition to community service.

"If he'd of drove the car it'd be a totally different circumstance and even if he didn't get arrested, even if he didn't get arrested, and he would have put himself in the same situation at 4:30 in the morning in that condition we would have sent him to do the same thing for his future safety and his future decision making,"said Saban.

The genetic makeup of the defensive front 7 along with the secondary, will look a lot different this season. With six guys getting picked off by the NFL it's all about the next talent to emerge for the Tide.

"It's all we do is reload and you know the younger guys and the older guys, guys that really didn't have as much roles last year, they're gonna embrace the challenge," said Alabama linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton.

"We just try to use the next man up mentality," Alabama defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne said.

No official word yet but it's likely Jalen Hurts will be returning as the starting quarterback. The reigning SEC Offensive MVP is working on passing efficiency and he says he's very comfortable as the team's leader.

"It's my team and I have to lead. I was the starter last year too so I felt like the old guy," said Hurts.

Alabama will be looking to incorporate a lot of the younger players. Twelve of those are newcomers as of this summer, and seven which are actually 5 stars so we'll see which youngsters will get the playing time early.
