TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) -

The Tallassee Police Department found the body of a missing child swept away on the Tallapoosa River Saturday.

The body was found at around 11:09 p.m. Detectives received information from a witness on a possible area that the child had been seen and returned to the area with officers from Alabama Fish and Game.

The 18-month-old had been reported missing by a group of swimmers at around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, off of Highway 229, according to Tallassee Fire Dept. Assistant Chief David Rogers. Rogers says the party attempted to get to shore but the rising waters caused the 18-month-old to slip back into the water and was swept away.

The child was released to the Elmore County coroner.
