Local medical team going to assist in Puerto Rico

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Alabama 3 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (AL3 DMAT) flew to Atlanta this morning where they will be transported by military aircraft to set up a field hospital in hard hit Puerto Rico. 

Three members of the team are from Mobile Fire-Rescue while others represent Mobile and Baldwin counties as well as Mobile and Mississippi hospitals, Arcadian Ambulance and Physio Control. 

Mobile Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Steve Huffman said, "there will also be team members from Florida, Texas, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania teams traveling with them."

The team, which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is made up of doctors, nurses, paramedics, other medical specialties and support personnel. 

The team could be deployed between 21-31 days.
