COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Andrew Scarborough appeared before Judge Julius Hunter in Columbus Recorders Court, answering to charges of murder in connection with 19-year-old Diondre Murphy's shooting death.

Hunter had moved to continue Scarborough's case until he and his family could find an attorney.

A public defender represented the 16-year-old suspect Tuesday morning. Scarborough pleaded not guilty to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Columbus police arrested Andrew Scarborough on Nov. 2, saying he shot and killed Murphy. Columbus detectives testified in court that several witnesses saw Scarborough the night of October 24, on 41st Street and Young Avenue.

First responders found Murphy at home near that intersection, having been shot multiple times.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan pronounced Murphy dead after he was sent to Midtown Medical Center.

Scarborough is being charged with murder as an adult under Georgia Senate Bill 440.

SB 440 stipulates that "certain juvenile offenders who commit certain violent felonies shall be tried as adults in the superior court."

Murder is on the list of the seven violent felonies specified in the law.

Judge Hunter bound Scarborough's case over to Superior Court, where a judge there will determine his bond.
