COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus police are investigating an attempted armed robbery leaving one man dead on Fort Benning Road.

"Officers arrived on scene at which time it was determined that one individual was deceased," said Maj. J.D. Hawk of the Columbus Police Department. "One other individual was shot in the arm, and two other individuals who fled the scene were also shot."

Police were called to the scene at Columbus Pawn Shop shortly after noon Wednesday.

Deputy Coroner Charles Newton confirmed the deceased individual was a part-time employee at the pawn shop.

Investigators combed the scene for hours as people in neighboring businesses left wondering what went wrong.

"Every day I lock my doors, because I'm so scared here, said Awa Dianne, owner of Eva African Hair Braiding. "One day they might come here to rob me,” she added.

Investigators say they are still looking for anyone else who may be connected.

"Checking on the possibility of anyone else being involved in this, at this time it appears to be a robbery in progress that went bad," said Hawk.

This latest fatal shooting hit closer to home for some.

Dianne says she’s more cautious than ever. "I'm scared. In Columbus, you can't be too careful here. Every day on the news, you see people are shot."
