Columbus barber springs into action after Pawn Shop robbery turned deadly

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Only a Circle K gas station on Fort Benning Road separates the barber shop Jason Smith manages and the Columbus Pawn Shop where a deadly shooting happened Wednesday afternoon.

Smith says he was trying to help one of the victims just after they were shot. The man who was shot and killed was identified as 68-year-old Joseph Johnson III.

"I actually heard it and I ran across and seen the other barbers and we grabbed the guy and he had been hit like twice and didn't even know it...he just asked me if he was okay when he lifts his shirt up he was wounded obviously," Smith says.

Investigators scanned the property today taking pictures and looking inside and outside of the shop.

The owner of the shop was also on scene. He didn’t want to be interviewed but says this is a tragic incident and he will open back up until Jan. 2  because all of his employees were shot.

Columbus Police are being tight-lipped about any further information on this case. Police say the incident looked to be a robbery that went bad and they are checking for anyone connected to the shooting.

People are stopping by saying the people who worked here are good people and can't believe this happened.

"You just got to pray for everybody, the ones that did it and the ones that it got done to. Everyone is hurting today," Smith said.

There is a growing memorial outside the shop of flowers people have dropped off.
