Businesses, city, people preparing for early Mardi Gras season

One of the most exciting seasons for our area is almost here. The city, stores, and people are getting ready for an early Mardi Gras season. This year Mardi Gras will fall on February 13 and the surrounding parades are even starting as early as next weekend.

"Just after the holidays are over, then boom its Mardi Gras time, I'm excited" said one Mardi Gras fanatic. As people are taking down their Christmas lights, some Mardi Gras shoppers like Billy Atkins are keeping up the same holiday spirits for an early Mardi Gras.

Atkins said, "You got to get everything ready for Mardi Gras." Although Atkins' spirit is up, he feels a bit rushed preparing his yearly float. He continued, "We just got over Christmas and it's hard to work on Mardi Gras and Christmas at the same time so we're having to rush to get ready for Mardi Gras."

Owner of Toomey's Mardi Gras, Stephen Toomey told FOX10 News his store has already experienced a lot of foot traffic this new year. "We've been really busy with the first seven days of January" Toomey said.

Other businesses like Pollman's Bake Shop is anticipating a peak in king cake orders, but its ready for the rush. "Pressure...because we just got finished with Christmas it's a big transition you know we are jumping right through" said one worker Ashley Chancey.

As businesses and Mardi Gras lovers are preparing so is the city. The city of Mobile already added its barricades and no parking signs during and after parade hours downtown. The city said its also encouraging parade goers to recycle this year.
