COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Several organizations came together in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Columbus.
The Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission, Tree Columbus Inc., Georgia Food Oasis, and CCG Urban Forestry and Beautification Division planted trees at MercyMed of Columbus on 2nd Avenue.
Workers planted pear, fruit, and fig trees, in addition to vegetables in MercyMed's community garden.
"A lot of people in this community are a long way from a grocery store. Here with these vegetables that have been planted, all they have to is walk over here," said Gloria Weston-Smart, director of Keep Columbus Beautiful.
The MercyMed garden is open to the public.
