RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - The American Cancer Society of Russell County kicked off its Relay for Life at the Central Activity Center in Phenix City.
Today's kickoff event was for the upcoming walk for life on May 4. This year's theme is "Strike Out Cancer."
"The kickoff is so important because this way we can let our community know that we are back. We haven't won the battle yet, we haven't found the cure to cancer, but we are back and we are going to get it done this year," says Dimple Davis, event chair for Relay for Life Russell County.
Gary Cornelius was the keynote speaker today. He serves as state leader for the American Cancer Society Action Network and is involved in his local community's Relay for Life.
Cornelius is also a cancer survivor.
Organizers say they are looking to recruit at least 45 teams to participate in the walk this year.
