Ft. Mitchell locals shocked by road rage shooting at Dollar General

FORT MITCHELL, AL (WTVM) - One man is dead and two men were injured following a shooting at a Dollar General store in Fort Mitchell.

According to Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor, the shooting was a result of a road rage incident between two cars that began on JR Allen Parkway in Columbus.  The incident continued to Highway 165 in Fort Mitchell.

Gunfire was exchanged between both cars.

Three men were involved in the shooting. One man died after being shot, and two men were taken into surgery for their wounds.

The victim has been identified as Lorenzo Freeman of Fort Mitchell.

No other people or Dollar General employees were injured during the shooting.

Marlene Roney lives just down the road and says she came to the scene and saw a body laying on the ground.

“It's scary, very scary because this is a quiet, quiet town," Roney said.

Numerous bullet holes pierced the Dollar General building.

The workers at the store say they locked themselves and customers inside when they heard gunshots. One bullet came through and busted some sheetrock inside, no one was injured.

Gas station clerks from across the street say investigators took surveillance footage from the store that caught some of the incidents on camera.

Curtis Edmond questions the motive of the shootout - if it started with road rage or is there more to the story.

"All that shooting, all that killing? It had to be something else," Edmond said.

Sheriff Taylor says more information on this case should be released in the coming days.
