Armed robbery suspect killed in police shootout

DUNWOODY, GA (CBS46) -

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are on the scene of an officer shootout at a Walmart Shopping Center in Dunwoody.

Police say Jason Lappe, 44, committed an armed robbery at a Kroger on the 8000 block of Holcomb Bridge Road in Johns Creek.

Soon after he was spotted at the Walmart on the 5000 block of Winter Chapel Road in Dunwoody.

A shootout ensued when police attempted to apprehend the suspect.

He was sent to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment where he was pronounced dead.

"The suspect at that point was detained and first aid was immediately rendered to the suspect while DeKalb County Fire and EMS responded to the scene. Once they responded to scene, they transported the suspect to Grady Hospital where he was pronounced deceased," said Dunwoody Police PIO Robert Parsons.

The officer who fired the shot was placed on paid administrative leave.

No officers were injured.
