Auburn auto burglary suspect shot by homeowner; also charged with raping 13-year-old

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) – An auto burglary suspect, who was also charged with raping a 13-year-old, was shot by a homeowner in Auburn.

On Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, Auburn police arrested Corey Bernard Heard, age 36, from Auburn, on a felony warrant charging him with breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.

At about 2:30 a.m., police responded to an interrupted auto burglary at a residence in the 200 block of Lee Road 17.

A homeowner approached a man who had entered his 2014 Ford Pick-up parked in his driveway. Instead of leaving the scene, the suspect approached the victim in a threatening manner.

The victim ordered the suspect to stop several times, fired warning shots and the suspect continued to come towards him.

The victim eventually fired in the direction of the suspect striking him in the foot.

Officers and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly afterward, and Corey B. Heard was arrested and taken to East Alabama Medical Center Emergency Room.

He was treated for non-life threatening injuries and later transported to the Lee County Jail where he remains in custody on a $3,000 bond.

Heard was also charged with rape of a 13-year-old  and he is being held on a $100,000 bond unrelated to this auto burglary incident.
