COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A Shaw High School student was charged with possession of narcotics.

The Muscogee County School District received a report that alleges two students violated the district’s policy regarding prohibited substances.

The incident report indicates that a female student at Shaw High school provided unauthorized prescription medication to another student on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The student, who received the medication, reported not feeling well to a legal guardian, who then contacted emergency medical services (EMS) and law enforcement Tuesday morning.

School administrators were notified of the incident upon arrival of EMS and law enforcement to the campus. Upon notification, administrators immediately conducted a follow-up investigation to identify the student who provided the substance.

The student who provided the medication has been charged with possession of narcotics. EMS released the student who received the substance to her legal guardian with no report of injury.

The case is currently under investigation by the police department. Both students will face disciplinary action for alleged violations of Rule 2 of the Student Code of Conduct.

The school district released the following statement regarding the incident:

Prescriptive medicine or drugs, with or without medical cause and/or permission, require registration with the school’s guidance department in accordance with school policy and procedures. In addition, each site requires students to register medicines with the principal.

We are primarily concerned with maintaining a safe and productive environment for all campuses to achieve success in our school system. Allegations of this nature are considered carefully to proceed with the best course of action for our students and personnel. We will continue to work with our local law enforcement, school counselors, social workers, and peer groups to facilitate positive learning environments without the presence of illegal substances.
