LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - The GBI determined the death of a LaGrange man while in sheriffs' custody was not caused by any criminal act committed by deputies.
Following a reported dispute with a woman at a LaGrange home in January 2017, James Thompson was placed in handcuffs and sat on the ground by Troup County Sheriff's deputies. Officials say at some point, he stopped breathing.
According to officers, Thompson was very combative during the arrest.
The GBI opened an investigation into his death.
The case has been closed after the District Attorney's findings determined Thompson's death was not caused by unlawful acts by the deputies involved in the incident.
