Army vet snaps images of student volunteers giving back

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – "I enlisted to give," said Ret. Army MSG Worthington Gibbs, who's lived in his Columbus home for 22 years. When watching college students take time from their day to help him, he felt it was 'reciprocity.'  "You give and it shall be given to you," Gibbs said.

Students from Columbus State University took time Saturday to help Gibbs, a veteran, spruce up his front yard, as part of their joint volunteer work through House of Heroes of the Chattahoochee Valley.

Gibbs said he did not know House of Heroes or the work the organization did until his next-door neighbor introduced him to the volunteers.

This team helped Gibbs on a day when they continued building a legacy of service started by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"The weather has been muddy, rainy... we still came out," student Faythe Pollard said. "Just because it's an off day, doesn't mean you can't be on today," she said.

"We all know a lot of things that Dr. King has done for us," said student Daijah Cooke. "So, it's awesome that we can still do it in this day and time."

Seeing these young people clear debris and leaves from his home of 22 years inspired Gibbs to capture this moment in time.

"I'm going to shoot some photos and some video," he said, "post it on Facebook and talk about what I've seen here today." "House of Heroes," Gibbs said, "they're a very worthy organization."

Cooke, Pollard and other volunteers said this small gesture can't compare to a soldier's sacrifice.

"Giving back is everything," Cooke said. "You need people to give back. We want to give back to Columbus," Pollard said, "and to a veteran that has given to us."
