Alabama is stepping up its game when it comes to letting people know that Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras!

Brittany Callahan of Mobile was driving through NOLA when she stopped to snap a photo of a billboard. It reads “You are 114 miles away from America’s original Mardi Gras.” The billboard is sponsored by “Sweet Home Alabama”, which is the state’s official travel website.

Callahan posted the photo to Facebook and it started to go viral, getting a lot of reaction from Mobilians!

“I don’t blame New Orleans for copying us! That’s what people do,” laughed Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “Ours is still the best. It’s the original Mardi Gras!”

Mayor Stimpson even invited New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to come to Mobile Mardi Gras in a Facebook post that is also starting to go viral!

Mayor Landrieu’s office sent FOX10 News this statement:

Please attribute the following to Tyronne Walker, Communications Director:

“New Orleans Mardi Gras is known as the greatest free show on earth. Every year, we host  thousands of Alabamans during Mardi Gras season and this year will be no different. We look forward to celebrating our tricentennial Mardi Gras with our neighbors to the East.”

--Tyronne Walker, Communications Director

FOX10 News Reporter Devan Coffaro spoke to locals about why there’s nothing like Mardi Gras in the Port City. WATCH her story in the video above.
