The former executive administrative assistant to the mayor of the City of Prichard was arrested Thursday on 17 counts of theft of property.

James Antuan Blackman is accused of stealing more than $100,000. His arrest comes three weeks after an audit of City of Prichard finances found irregularities. Blackman was fired on January 16, six days after the city noticed money was missing.

Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich said Blackman stole the money by writing checks to himself.

When Prichard Mayor Jimmie Gardner announced the firing of Blackman, he was he wasn't sure when the alleged embezzlement began or when it ended.

In a statement emailed Thursday afternoon, Gardner said, "As Mayor of the City of Prichard, it is with great concern that the trust of our citizens was eroded by an employee of my office.  When the alleged act of theft was discovered, it was reported immediately to the appropriate authorities. An arrest has been made and the process must be allowed to go its full course. I ask that you pray for our city, Mr. James Blackman and all those affected by this horrific event."
