Drivers beware: MPD serious about towing during parades

(FOX10 News) (FOX10 News)

Despite the warnings by Mobile Police, more vehicles got towed for parking illegally during the Order of Polka Dots parade Thursday night.

Yellow signs warn drivers to not park in certain areas 2 hours before and after the parade. The Mardi Gras impound lot underneath I-10 across from the Cruise Terminal was empty starting at 4:30 p.m., but it didn't take long for it to start filling up.

It doesn't take long for us to run into officers making their first tow on Church Street. While hooking and loading the vehicle, the owner of the truck came running up.

"There are no signs on this block," said Jerome Lee.

Despite Jerome trying to make his case, officers point out several signs and tow his truck away.

"Well I just parked here because there were no signs saying parade route or no parking, so I figured this was safe. And I just happened to come out to my truck to get something and my truck was being loaded up. And the policeman would not listen to me. Because there was signs a block and a half down and a block and a half the other way. There were no signs on this block and I've got the video to prove it," explained Jerome.

He's not the only who will eventually make their way to the Mardi Gras impound lot.

An hour before the parade rolled, police had already towed about 10 vehicles. To get your vehicle back - expect to shell out $125. While we were there, Jerome arrives to pay his fine and get his truck.

Although he drives off with a smile, he says he will dispute it in court.

In all, 18 vehicles towed Thursday night and 19 parking citations issued.

The Mardi Gras impound lot will be open until 11 p.m. Vehicles that haven't been retrieved by then will be taken to the permanent impound lot behind the Mobile Police Training Academy on Virginia Street.
