COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Teachers and faculty members at St. Anne-Pacelli are stressing the importance of eating breakfast and making them aware of childhood hunger.

They collected boxes of cereal the entire month of January for their Grains-for-Brains celebration. This is all to help fight childhood hunger right here in the Chattahoochee Valley.

“By teaching about hunger in our own community and how we can give back, that’s beautiful," said Ronie Collins, St. Anne-Pacelli President and High School Principal. "That’s them sending a prayer to each child in a box of cereal.”

Students gathered in the gym in pajamas with 1,000 boxes of cereal that will be donated to people who visit Saint Anne Community Outreach, helping those right here in the Chattahoochee Valley.

“We’re going to be distributing the boxes in a variety of ways," said Katie Byers, Director of St. Anne Community Outreach. "It’s going to help over 100,000 families.”

One in every five children in the state of Georgia goes to school hungry. This past year St. Anne Community Outreach gave food to 11,000 people in our community, providing just under 250,000 meals.

There was 100% participation by the students and they were very excited to help fight childhood hunger.
