MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Important new developments announced Friday afternoon on the Mobile River Bridge.

Field work for the project is set to begin next week.

Construction crews will begin mobilizing next week, and driving test pilings may start as soon as Wednesday, February 14th.

Those test pilings will provide data to teams submitting proposals to design and build the project.

While that will go on, FOX10 News has learned that, for months, project representatives have been talking to businesses located where the bridge will be built: in one case, an attorney at 354 St. Emmanuel Street.

They're talking about re-locating those businesses and getting soil samples from their properties.

Allison Gregg with the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project said, "ALDOT will begin doing some pile driving in three spots along the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project alignment. So that's at Texas Street, on the west side of Mobile River and then along the Bayway as well."

Jason Darley, the attorney who has an office at 354 St. Emmanuel said, "Some representatives from the Department of  Transportation have met with a lot of the people on this block and they're just discussing relocation costs and expenses for that and, then, appraisals on the other buildings."

Four teams of contractors, designers and other specialists have been selected to submit proposals, and project officials said its mandatory for those teams to accommodate bikes and pedestrians.

They hope construction will begin in 2019 and be finished in 2024 and say the project will cost about $2 billion.

Tolls and grants are among the resources being looked at to help finance the project.
