Lloyd's Lane victim's parents react to arrest

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

We sat down with the parents of Claudia Becton-Leatherwood, the victim of the November 3rd crash on Lloyd's Lane in Mobile following the news of the arrest of 16-year-old Wilkinson Howes. He turned himself in today after a warrant was issued for his arrest by Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.

Leatherwood's parents, Gary and Beverly Becton say this brings them a step closer to getting the closure they so desperately need.

Its no secret that the past few months have been challenging for the family of Claudia Becton-Leatherwood...after today's arrest they can breathe a sigh of relief.

"Finally," they said.

At every waking moment Claudia's parents say she comes to mind. Especially since reminders of the accident are all around. The accident happened right in front of their home on Lloyd's Lane as she was leaving that night.

"Everyday we walk out the door and come in the door. Every time. Every time I work in the yard and I rake the yard, I can still smell the rubber. The detectives, all of their investigative marks are still there, they haven't washed away yet," said Gary Becton.

Gary Becton, Claudia's father, says no matter the outcome of this all, the toughest pill to swallow was that nothing can bring his daughter back but news of the arrest makes it easier to deal with.

"I almost feel like relief. Its just a relief. It really just felt like we're finally getting some closure," he said.

The Bectons say they realize they aren't the only ones effected by this and their thoughts are with the suspect's family.

"Our prayers go out to them. I don't believe he woke up that morning planning to come and do what he did or cause what happened to our daughter," said the victim's father.

After three long and hard months, the Bectons will never forget the night they loss Claudia.

"She waved bye and blew me a kiss and saying see you tomorrow," said Beverly Becton, her mother.

Standing strong and holding on to their faith is the way they say they'll get through this.

"That's where we get our strength, in the word. We just believe in the God of the heavens and of earth."

The family is asking for prayers and support as they go through this difficult process.
