MFRD extinguishes Center Street house fire; arson arrest made

Mobile Fire-Rescue firefighters responded to a house fire on 1000 block of Center Street in the Plateau community around 5:30 a.m. Friday morning.

"I was sleep in the house," one of the homeowners told FOX10 News. "My little brother woke up and he saw the flames coming through the back window of the kitchen. Right on the back porch behind the kitchen."

The man says there were five adults and one small child in the home when it caught fire.

"I'm pretty thankful. I'm just glad we made it out of there," he said.

The man said the family had to bust through a front bedroom window just to make it out to safety. By 6 a.m., the fire department reported the fire was extinguished.

"The majority of the damage was to the rear of the structure," Steven Millhouse with MFRD said. "Flames burned through the rear of the roof. Additionally, the home sustained water, smoke and operations damage."

"It was just all of a sudden so I think somebody set it on fire. When we got up we saw it flamed up so we just got out of there," the man said in disbelief.

Fire Investigators were later informed that the fire was set intentionally by a male resident following a domestic dispute with his live-in girlfriend. The suspect was identified as 28-year-old James Thomas.

Thomas has been charged with first-degree arson, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, MFRD said.
