U.S.S. Philippine Sea arrives in Mobile for Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras revelers have the chance to tour a United States naval ship throughout the Carnival weekend, and the ship's arrival also gives patriots an opportunity to party in the Port City.

The USS Philippine Sea arrived at the Alabama State Port Authority Friday morning.

The USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) is a Flight II Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser with its home port in Mayport, Fla.. The Phillipine Sea operates under the motto “Eternal Vigilance.”

A group of veterans, Navy league members, and community members boarded U.S. Coast Guard boats and traveled out into the bay to be one of the first to tour the 500 foot ship.

The USS Philippine Sea has been apart of the Navy for almost 30 years and has over 300 crew members.

Although everyone on board is from different states and has different ranks, it's safe to say pretty much the whole crew was excited to dock in the Port City and get a taste of Carnival season.

Command Master Chief, Jeffrey West, said "I'd like to thank the town of Mobile for having the greatest war ship in the Navy into the great state of Alabama. We look forward to having a great time here. We'll be welcoming family and friends on board, giving tours. We're just looking forward to having a great time. This will be my first time here. So i'm looking forward to it."

Dozens gathered at the Alabama State Port Authority to welcome the ship during a brief welcome ceremony.
