Mardi Gras visitors escape cold weather further north

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Plenty of people from the Mobile area are out celebrating Mardi Gras.

But, so are visitors from out of town.

FOX10 News met a number of people on Dauphin Street around lunchtime.

Adding to the spirit was the Blow House Brass Band.

The band was entertaining at a pre-parade party for members and friends of the Mystics of Time.

But everyone on the street was enjoying the music.

Margaret Gilmer is from Vicksburg, Mississippi, but has ties here.

She said, "We grew up in Mobile, come to Mardi Gras every year, My mom and dad, they were big Mardi Gras fans."

Visitors from out of town are shopping, too, where there are plenty of reminders of what city had the first Mardi Gras.

That's where we met Dorothy Montgomery from Brooklyn, New York, visiting family here for the fifth year.

She said, "People are wonderful. I love this.  The town is beautiful. "

Tim and Theresa Koop from Ohio are visiting family members who are in the LaShe's organization.

Theresa Koop said, "We did the ball, too. It's really cool, so that was real fancy.  Felt like we were elegant and all."

But for he Koop's, it's a short stay.

Theresa said, "We have to leave tomorrow:  go back to snow and cold."
