11-year-old raises diabetes awareness with record-setting walk across America

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A boy from Florida is attempting to set a record by being the youngest person to cross America on foot.

He's also raising awareness along the way. Eleven-year-old Noah stopped in Columbus Friday.

Noah is on a mission to cure type 1 diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with when he was one-year-old. He has received insulin shots most of his life.

Last year, he decided he didn't want to be diabetic and wanted to do something about it.

Noah is passing through western Georgia on his way to Governor Nathan Deal's office with his father, Robert Barnes. He began his journey in Key West, Florida.

"We struggled for the first nine years with what to do. Last year, when he came to us about this we were like okay, maybe this can be the way to promote a cure," says Barnes.

Barnes is attempting his one world record for being the only person to walk across and bicycle back across America.

With his father by his side, Noah is hoping to help find a cure for diabetes.
