OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – Opelika police have identified the person who fired shots in the 600 block of Edmon Avenue on Feb. 8 around 11:15 p.m.
Shyrod Jones, 23, of Opelika, AL was identified as the shooter that allegedly killed 19-year-old Jabbar Combs, Jr., of Tuskegee, AL.
According to police, the investigation has determined that Jones and another person were at their home. At approximately 11:15 PM, Jones heard loud knocking and banging on his rear door.
Jones then armed himself with a firearm due to a previous burglary at his home. Jones went to the rear door and upon opening the rear door was confronted by a person unknown to him, Jabbar Combs.
Jones stated that Combs made a further movement, which Jones perceived as a threat. Jones then fired his gun.
"It just so happen [the shooting] happened on Edmon Avenue where we've had some problems in the past," said Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller. "Several months ago we started proactive two man patrols that are working in some of the areas that we've had more problems than other areas."
The mayor says there's no rhyme or reason to when proactive patrols are out in areas like Edmon Avenue, but it's all part of a bigger picture to crack down on crime so incidents like the death of Jabbar Combs are prevented.
After the shooting, Jones voluntarily came to the Opelika Police Department to be interviewed and has been forthcoming and cooperative with the investigation.
This case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department's Investigative Services Division.
Evidence from this case will be presented to a Lee County grand jury at a later date.
