Verdict reached in the Upatoi triple murder trial

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A verdict has been reached in the Upatoi triple murder trial.

The jury has found 17-year-old Rufus Burks guilty of one count of felony murder, guilty on two counts of theft by taking, one count of kidnapping, and burglary. 

The judge declared a mistrial for three counts of malice murder charges and two counts of felony murder charges.

Burks is one of three men charged in the 2016 deaths of Gloria Short, her son Caleb Short, and granddaughter Gianna Lindsey.

Raheam Gibson and  Jervarceay Tapley entered a guilty plea before the trial began facing murder.

Sentencing has been set for March 23, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. in Recorder's Court.
