COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Columbus City Council is taking steps towards a more business-friendly 13th Street corridor.
The council approved a recommendation from the Georgia Department of Transportation to reduce four lanes to two lanes on 13th Street between 13th Avenue and 5th Avenue.
The changes will be made to decrease traffic on 13th Street.
The six lanes on the bridge will also be cut to four lanes. There will be restriping and repaving as well.
Garrett Lawrence who's running for the Columbus City Council District 7 seat says he hopes to break the barrier from Uptown Columbus and midtown.
You accommodate traffic the way it naturally flows and you give people the option to park in front of a business. Give them more places to get out of their car and be active," says Lawrence.
Those in favor of the redevelopment hopes the slowed down traffic will encourage the business.
