East Alabama high school basketball teams advance in state playoffs

(WTVM) - Six area basketball teams advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Regionals on Tuesday night.

Both Opelika squads punched a ticket to the 6A Central Regional in Montgomery with wins over Pelham. The girls won 73-26 while the boys had to work a little harder, beating the Panthers 66-63 in double overtime.

Russell County advanced as well with an 84-61 victory over Vigor. The Warriors are heading to the South Regional in Dothan.

In 5A, Eufaula is also moving on to Dothan after topping Vigor, 81-54. The news not as good for Beauregard, eliminated on the road by Calera, 94-56.

And in 2A, both Lanett and LaFayette advanced to the Northeast Regional in Jacksonville. The two-time defending state champion Panthers rolled past Westbrook Christian 85-58, while the Bulldogs had to hit the road, winning at Collinsville, 57-49.

Area 7A teams begin playing at the Central Regional on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT. The Central girls play R.E. Lee, followed by the Auburn boys, who are also facing the Generals in the next game. The Auburn girls take on Enterprise in the third game of the day, with the Central boys playing Jeff Davis in the final contest.
