Murder suspect booked into county jail; extradited from Texas

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – News Leader 9 has confirmed with Columbus police that 26-year-old Dewayne Jones has been booked into the Muscogee County Jail.

Recent testimony from CPD detectives in Recorders Court indicates Jones fled from the Chattahoochee Valley to Mexico.

Authorities issued a warrant on Jones just hours after 24-year-old Lashay Ford was shot and killed at a home on Wickham Drive January 25. Police recently testifying in court Jones and two other men were with him the night of the crime...

At one point Columbus police spoke to Jones over the phone, convincing the suspect to turn himself in to authorities in El Paso, Texas by Feb. 1st.

In a recorded phone interview with Columbus Police, Jones implicated one suspect, Carl McClendon, as having a weapon the night of the shooting. McClendon has since pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering Ford.

For now, CPD detectives continue to search for the third, still-unnamed suspect believed to have been with Jones and McClendon the night of the shooting.
