COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Betty Jean King and Donna King have lived right across the street from the Rhythm and Blues Sports bar in Cusseta, Alabama for almost ten years. They say they have never heard any gunshots in their neighborhood until last night.

According to the Lee County Sheriffs Office, 28-year-old Tamichael Jones was found dead in the parking lot of the bar suffering from a gunshot wound.

"I heard the first four shots and then one more shot was made. Then I heard a lot of people getting in their cars and driving away,” said Betty Jean.

According to officials with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, there was a private party being held at the club before the shooting and when the bullets rang out, all of the witnesses fled the scene. Officials say they don’t know what led up to the shooting, and it’s being investigated as a homicide.

"I been here since September 2009 and there’s never been a homicide there to my knowledge," explained Donna.

Jones’ body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem exam. According to neighbors the business has seen it’s fair share of incidents, before but it’s never resulted in a life being taken right across the street.

"There have been incidents happen in the past, but we can't always control people's actions when they're outside you know," said neighbor Barry Tucker.

According to the pastor of the church next door to the bar, the doors are normally open when service at the church is over. The business has not opened its doors since the shooting happened around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

“I really don’t think it’s a bad place. You know a lot of places kick against it but I don’t think it’s bad,” said Betty Jean.

The case is being investigated by the Lee County Sheriff's office, the Lee County Coroners Office, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 334-749-5651 or the Lee County Coroner Secret Witness Line at 334-745-8686.
