Officials say Cusseta Sports Bar is a 'threat to the community'

CUSSETA, AL (WTVM) - An Opelika man was found lying in the parking lot of Rhythm and Blues Sports Bar in Cusseta around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Tamichael Jones,  28, was pronounced dead on scene suffering from several gunshot wounds according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.

The Lee County Sheriffs office say they are familiar with the sports bar on US Highway 29 N due to previous incidents over the years.

"We've responded to numerous calls of disturbances at this particular Rhythm and Blues location...the club is unsafe and a threat to the community," Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said.

The Alcohol Beverage Control Board in Montgomery stripped the bar of its alcohol license in September. The bar appealed the decision and the board ruled again in December to not renew the license. However, the bar is persistent and another appeal is under review at this time.

Sheriff Jones says issues don't stem just from gun violence, numerous cars have been stopped going to and from the club over the years and drugs have been recovered.

"There's been an issue of sales of controlled substances," Sheriff Jones says.

Tamichael Jones death is the third to result from a shooting in Lee County this year.

"I ask folks to think first before they do something… think about what your actions can cause," Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said.

Lee County investigators say no witnesses were on scene when they arrived and found Jones body.

The case is being investigated by the Lee County Sheriff's office, the Lee County Coroners Office, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 334-749-5651 or the Lee County Coroner Secret Witness Line at 334-745-8686
