Columbus middle school ramps up security following FL shooting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Veterans Memorial Middle School is making several security changes to their building.

The changes that have been made to the school's security measures are an update to their current safety plan.

This comes a week after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL.

The new security measures are listed below:

  • Only VMMS students and MCSD Employees will be permitted beyond the office area.
  • ANY visitor/guest/parent on campus will need to:
    • Check-in at the front office
    • Receive and wear a visitor’s pass
    • Have an MCSD employee or designee escort the visitor to their destination
  • Parents and Guardians needing to personally meet with teachers/visit classrooms must have a scheduled appointment
