OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Opelika wasted no time in finding a new head football coach.
Erik Speakman was named the new head coach Wednesday, just one day after Caleb Ross resigned to take over at Prattville.
Speakman is a familiar face. He's spent the past 18 seasons as an assistant football coach and the last seven as defensive coordinator.
It's his first head coaching gig in football, and he's ready to take over the reins. We're 192 days from kickoff, so what will an Erik Speakman team look like?
"I'm a defensive guy, so we're going to play great defense," Speakman said. "Offensively, you always want to put up a bunch of points. We're going to run the football and throw it down the field. I feel like that puts a lot of stress on us defensively, so we're going to have a great running game and with Cade Blackmon coming back next year, I think we're going to have a great passing game."
Speakman is expected to stay on as Athletic Director until the end of the year.
