'Sassy Seniors' host Purple Power Day to promote cancer awareness

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Today, in Phenix City, a group of senior adults is hosting their annual Purple Power Day to raise money for the American Cancer Society of Russell County.

The Sassy Seniors are a group of senior adult women in Phenix City who work hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life every year.

This year they are looking to strike out cancer.

The ladies are inviting you to come out and join them for some food, games, and entertainment for Purple Power Day.

They have raised thousands of dollars since they kicked off the cause in January.

Now, the last step is to gear up for the final bang, the Relay for Life walk on May 4th. The Sassy Seniors are looking to recruit at least 45 teams to participate this year.

"I don't think anybody walks in this life that hasn't had a good friend or family member that's not touched with cancer. So, we just deem this a worthy cause to put forth our efforts and our time and our energy into this cause," said Debbie Pierce, a Sassy Senior volunteer.

Hundreds of people come out each year in support of the cause and the Sassy Seniors say this is going to be their biggest year yet in support of cancer survivors and their caregivers.

Purple Power Day will take place at the Central Activity Center in Phenix City from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
