AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Garrett Morris hit a 3-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Auburn Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Smiths Station Panthers on Thursday night in Auburn, a victory that clinched the AHSAA 7A-Area 4 title.
Clay Weatherly took a perfect game into the sixth inning, before walking two batters and surrendering the home run, one of only two hits he gave up in six innings of work. Brooks Fuller picked up the victory, giving up two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings of work. Jackson Arnold retired the final two batters to earn the save.
Dalton Harrelson drove in both runs for Smiths Station with RBI singles in the third and seventh innings.
"I'm just proud of them," Tigers coach Matt Cimo said. "It's a lot of hard work. To take two from Smiths Station back-to-back is a big accomplishment because it's a very good team out there. Coach Ferry does a great job and we're just lucky to have an opportunity to win the area.
Auburn earns the right to host in the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs next weekend, while Smiths Station will have to hit the road. Morris doesn't think this is the last chapter between the two area rivals this season.
"We expect to see this team later in the playoffs," said the senior center fielder. "I don't think this is the last we're going to see of them. They're a great team with great coaches, so I'm always looking forward to playing this team."
