BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The aunt of one of Birmingham’s youngest homicide victims says she is still coming to grips with the death of her niece.

“I wonder if I could have changed something some kinds of way, but nevertheless it happened and she’s no longer with us,” says Shenise Abercrombie.

On March 7, 2018, her niece, 17-year-old Courtlin Arrington was shot and killed at Huffman High School.

17-year-old Huffman High junior Michael Barber has been charged with reckless manslaughter in connection to Arrington’s death.

“I know we have a fight ahead, but we’re just trying to heal above all,” Abercrombie said during an interview Thursday.

She says her family is also searching for solutions and ways to change a culture of gun violence that seems to be rampant among some teens.

“A better way to resolve conflict and parents getting more involved in children's lives to see what's going on and heat things off before they get to that point,” she further explains.

Abercombie applauds the town hall meeting held Thursday night at Parker High, hoping the student-led event leads to solutions.

That meeting comes just two days after another Huffman High student, Nyteria Spigner was shot and killed, bringing Abercrombie once again to heartbreak.

“There's nothing you can say.  A young life - had a future ahead of them and could have been anything and been taken.”
