COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a 74-year-old man. Many neighbors say they heard the gunshots Saturday afternoon.
"I heard a bullet flying next to my window. I went out to come out and check to see if my neighbor got shot or my dad got shot cause he lives in the back of the house. I didn't see nobody, so I went ahead and called the police," one neighbor told News Leader Nine.
According to police they arrived on the scene at ten-thirty Sunday morning and found 74-year-old William Meadows dead in his car at his home.
"I just feel awful cause I have kids, small kids that play up and down the street. I just feel awful and really bad about what happened," says neighbor Kenyata Marsh.
Columbus police confirm with News Leader 9 that Meadows had been in the vehicle for around 20 hours. Neighbors say this shooting has shaken the entire neighborhood.
"It's scary and afraid. We think our neighborhood is quiet. Elderly people live in this area. Now this happens right by us," says neighbor Irene Hedden.
"It makes me feel bad because it could've happened to anybody, even a kid. Even me, I could've walked outside and got shot for no reason at all," says another neighbor.
Police are still investigating, and anyone with information is asked to contact police as soon as possible.
