LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - Area law enforcement agencies across the country were given a first look and chance to test out a new, non-lethal device called the BolaWrap.

The BolaWrap is a remote restraint device designed to prevent unnecessary violent encounters.

"[LaGrange Chief of Police Lou Dekmar] is innovative when it comes to mental health issues," said BolaWrap representative and former Los Angeles County Assistant Sheriff Michael Rothans. "We definitely wanted to work with him."

"Mental illness is one of my priorities," said Dekmar. "Any innovation that reduces the likelihood of injury to an officer or someone that's affected by mental illness is an innovation worth piloting."

LaGrange Police, Troup County Sheriff's Deputies, Pine Mountain Police, as well as Franklin Police, participated in the BolaWrap demonstration.

The LaGrange Police Department is still considering whether to possibly use the BolaWrap in the community.
