SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - A 14-month-old toddler from Smiths Station died Friday following a drowning.
Keira Lynn Bragg passed away at Children's Hospital in Birmingham from a probable anoxic brain injury due to drowning.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a 911 hang-up call around 11:15 a.m. Thursday, May 3.
According to Lee County dispatchers, the voices of a man and woman could be heard screaming prior to the phone lines being disconnected during the 911 call.
When deputies arrived at the residence located in the 300 block of Lee Road 379 in Smiths Station, they found the front door unlocked, furniture in disarray, and the residence unoccupied.
Deputies were unable to locate or identify any homeowners.
This incident was documented and flagged for follow-up investigation.
Around 3:45 p.m., the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call from Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama.
According to medical staff, a fourteen-month-old female was brought into the emergency room by her parents around 11:30 a.m.
The parents reported that they had discovered their child in a back yard pool at their home.
The child was resuscitated by hospital staff and then later airlifted to Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham.
Life support efforts were continued until Friday morning when the child passed away shortly after 10:00 a.m. EST.
The toddler will be taken to the medical examiner's office in Montgomery at the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for a postmortem examination.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the infant remains under investigation.
